CD, Music for Nations 2003
Track list: Windowpane - In My Time of Need - Death Whispered a Lullaby - Closure - Hope Leaves - To Rid the Disease - Ending Credits - Weakness
This sibling to Deliverance displays the more sensitive side of Opeth's song writing. You've heard this on other Opeth albums, but this time there's nothing else but the soft acoustic interludes. The songs, a bit shorter than your usual Opeth pieces, flow nicely, in a very beautiful way. Damnation is not the best choice if you want to get familiar with Opeth, but in the other hand, many people who wouldn't like Opeth's other albums, will like Damnation. ****

This CD has changed my life. Opeth is the standard by which all other prog-metal groups are measured.

Opeth is the greatest

I've listened to pretty much every song Opeth has ever released and I can safely say that Damnation is every bit as good as Deliverance, or for that matter, any other Opeth offering. Absolutely fantastic!

I was somewhat disappointed that is was mellow straight through. The sweet ain't as sweet without the sour.

Easily one of my top 10 CDs of all time. So god damn soothing to listen to.

For anyone to be disappointed with this cd is absolutely mind-boggling. This is one of the most amazing albums ever written.. the musicianship, the emotion, the sheer beauty of it all is simply remarkable. Opeth promised one heavy album (Deliverance) and one mellow, experimental album.. and this delivers more than I could have imagined. A must have!

At first you think your falling asleep! It seems like your sniffing poppies or something! Then... All of a sudden your frikin' soul is taken over by some weird shit! You cannot beleive it but this is the Music of the Gods!!! It is Haunting if you let it get under your skin ....
5 Stars if you ask me!

opeth's damnation is easily one of the most original displays of musicianship i've heard in recent years. hauntingly breathtaking, and with a quality all its own, capable of numbing your thoughts....

I have heard a few songs of theirs before but a buddy of mine left this album in the player at work and I took it home with me. Haven't heard anything like it till now, one of the best Damn albums ever written.

I never heard of Opeth until last summer, when I bought Deliverance and Damnation. Deliverance is a great metal album, but Damnation is one of the greatest sets of music I have ever heard. These guys are TRUE musicians, not just grinding growling death metalists. Whether you're an Opeth fan or not, this album will blow you away.

I am a major Amorphis Fan, though I did hear a few Opeth tracks but Damnation is just stupendous better than Far From The Sun.

I just found a bunch of songs from Damnation on my computer - must have been in with a group of songs i downloaded from GrabIt or something- but anyway, i had never heard of Opeth before or anything, but i listened to it and was really impressed, so i had to look them up online. Are their other albums as good as this one?
Posted by: Firegod at March 12, 2004 2:16 AM
As far as the catagory goes- i would put it in the same catagory as A Perfect Circle's first album. What do u think? Some of it reminds me of that album. One of my favorite albums by the way.
Posted by: Firegod at March 12, 2004 2:30 AM
Rock on, awesome album. Too bad it's pretty much their only good one, not a big fan of the whole screaming and super heavy guitar riffs. This is a lot more mature, which is what I look for in music.

I just got into Opeth a few months ago and soon realized they are possibly the best death/black metal band around. Then I picked up Damnation and within a few hours it owned my life. I have listened to little else for the past few weeks. Now here's the icing on the cake, they've got a new dvd live performance called "Lamentations" in which they play 2 sets of songs, the first being the entire Damnation album, and as if that were not enough, you then get to see them destroy the world with an absolutely killer death metal set. This band is ridiculously good. So if you don't have Damnation, by all means get it, and if you love it, as anyone with the slightest ounce of good musical taste will, get the dvd and your life will be complete.

damnation is undoubtedly a masterpiece...fantastic...and full of sadness.it was a great experience...
Posted by: bahadır at May 4, 2004 10:31 PM
Not bad, and not great either. Its interesting in the context of Opeths' previous work but out of that context, as a singular work its not that compelling. This sounds something like Radiohead or Porcupine Tree in their more portentious moments. Damnation has some nice moments and manages to bypass the pompousness of most modern progressive rock, but its really not that special.

I'd rather be dead than not listening to this masterpiece. I give it a 20 over 10. That's it. It's as perfect as any other Opeth releases.

Amazing. Beautiful. Opeth has done it again. Their true versatility and creativity shows through with this album. I am obsessed with "Damnation." Fucking obsessed.
