CD, Music for Nations 2003
Track list: Windowpane - In My Time of Need - Death Whispered a Lullaby - Closure - Hope Leaves - To Rid the Disease - Ending Credits - Weakness
The category isn't really correct - Damnation has nothing to do with black or death metal. There isn't a single grunt or heavy guitar riff on the album. This sibling to Deliverance displays the more sensitive side of Opeth's song writing. You've heard this on other Opeth albums, but this time there's nothing else but the soft acoustic interludes. The songs, a bit shorter than your usual Opeth pieces, flow nicely, in a very beautiful way. Damnation is not the best choice if you want to get familiar with Opeth, but in the other hand, many people who wouldn't like Opeth's other albums, will like Damnation. ****
Category: Black/Death metalThis CD has changed my life. Opeth is the standard by which all other prog-metal groups are measured.
Posted by: Jeremy on May 8, 2003 06:08 AMOpeth is the greatest
Posted by: ahmed on May 29, 2003 02:34 PMI've listened to pretty much every song Opeth has ever released and I can safely say that Damnation is every bit as good as Deliverance, or for that matter, any other Opeth offering. Absolutely fantastic!

Posted by: doomsoldier on June 24, 2003 07:20 AMI was somewhat disappointed that is was mellow straight through. The sweet ain't as sweet without the sour.
Posted by: None on August 4, 2003 06:23 AMEasily one of my top 10 CDs of all time. So god damn soothing to listen to.
Posted by: Meshuggah on August 16, 2003 08:02 PMFor anyone to be disappointed with this cd is absolutely mind-boggling. This is one of the most amazing albums ever written.. the musicianship, the emotion, the sheer beauty of it all is simply remarkable. Opeth promised one heavy album (Deliverance) and one mellow, experimental album.. and this delivers more than I could have imagined. A must have!
Posted by: shayaan on August 27, 2003 10:54 PMAt first you think your falling asleep! It seems like your sniffing poppies or something! Then... All of a sudden your frikin' soul is taken over by some weird shit! You cannot beleive it but this is the Music of the Gods!!! It is Haunting if you let it get under your skin ....
5 Stars if you ask me!
Posted by: Tommy on September 12, 2003 02:32 AMthe most beautiful album in all times.
Posted by: Martin Funaro on September 13, 2003 10:51 PMopeth's damnation is easily one of the most original displays of musicianship i've heard in recent years. hauntingly breathtaking, and with a quality all its own, capable of numbing your thoughts....
Posted by: josh on September 26, 2003 07:54 AMexcellent vocals, great riffs, beautiful melodies, and the emotion!!
damnation is the best prog album since the great queensryche's operation: mindcrime!!

Windowpane blew my mind... they surprise me everytime...
Posted by: Prowler on December 24, 2003 10:35 PMI didn't like this album, because is so good that I want more, but there's no more.... I need more
Posted by: I dunno on December 24, 2003 11:34 PMthis album sucks
Posted by: this album sucks on January 2, 2004 05:06 AMI have heard a few songs of theirs before but a buddy of mine left this album in the player at work and I took it home with me. Haven't heard anything like it till now, one of the best Damn albums ever written.
Posted by: volksy67 on January 16, 2004 05:19 AMI never heard of Opeth until last summer, when I bought Deliverance and Damnation. Deliverance is a great metal album, but Damnation is one of the greatest sets of music I have ever heard. These guys are TRUE musicians, not just grinding growling death metalists. Whether you're an Opeth fan or not, this album will blow you away.
Posted by: hellno on January 22, 2004 09:30 PMI am a major Amorphis Fan, though I did hear a few Opeth tracks but Damnation is just stupendous better than Far From The Sun.
Posted by: Karthik on February 10, 2004 10:19 AMwow, this music is amazing, i was just introduced to this band i had never before this heard of Opeth but a friend of mine told me how great the songs were and even though i listented to rap and such he said even i would like this he was right, honestly this music is so expressive and haunting you feel like your being taken over by something, i love this music i wish their were more songs like it, its so original and new

Posted by: on February 23, 2004 02:35 AMFUCK! awesome awesome awesome. i'm seeing this album live soon
WHOA
I just found a bunch of songs from Damnation on my computer - must have been in with a group of songs i downloaded from GrabIt or something- but anyway, i had never heard of Opeth before or anything, but i listened to it and was really impressed, so i had to look them up online. Are their other albums as good as this one?
Posted by: Firegod on March 12, 2004 02:16 AMAs far as the catagory goes- i would put it in the same catagory as A Perfect Circle's first album. What do u think? Some of it reminds me of that album. One of my favorite albums by the way.
Posted by: Firegod on March 12, 2004 02:30 AMRock on, awesome album. Too bad it's pretty much their only good one, not a big fan of the whole screaming and super heavy guitar riffs. This is a lot more mature, which is what I look for in music.
Posted by: Oliver on April 6, 2004 05:59 AMI just got into Opeth a few months ago and soon realized they are possibly the best death/black metal band around. Then I picked up Damnation and within a few hours it owned my life. I have listened to little else for the past few weeks. Now here's the icing on the cake, they've got a new dvd live performance called "Lamentations" in which they play 2 sets of songs, the first being the entire Damnation album, and as if that were not enough, you then get to see them destroy the world with an absolutely killer death metal set. This band is ridiculously good. So if you don't have Damnation, by all means get it, and if you love it, as anyone with the slightest ounce of good musical taste will, get the dvd and your life will be complete.
Posted by: Jimmy on April 6, 2004 07:32 AMdamnation is undoubtedly a masterpiece...fantastic...and full of sadness.it was a great experience...
Posted by: bahadır on May 4, 2004 10:31 PMNot bad, and not great either. Its interesting in the context of Opeths' previous work but out of that context, as a singular work its not that compelling. This sounds something like Radiohead or Porcupine Tree in their more portentious moments. Damnation has some nice moments and manages to bypass the pompousness of most modern progressive rock, but its really not that special.
Posted by: Super Flyin' Jesus on May 17, 2004 08:20 AMOpeth is the Greatest! This Album is so full of Emotions! Its one of the Best Albums they ever made, one of the best Albums ever made.
Opeth changed my Life; this Music is unbelievably AWESOME! I love it
well first of all this album is absolutely beautiful but i had my doubts bc i thought since this was a mellow album i wouldnt like it but i couldnt b farther from the truth this album is great any fan and non-fan of opeth can love this album a 200 out of 100 its just that awsome
Posted by: jebu on July 7, 2004 10:54 AMI'd rather be dead than not listening to this masterpiece. I give it a 20 over 10. That's it. It's as perfect as any other Opeth releases.
