It's like a backpack, yet the child comes near the carrier like when carrying the child in a sling. It's very versatile, as you can carry the child in front, back or hip positions. I've also heard that some men prefer Ergo to a cloth sling, as they find it more masculine. I wouldn't know, I personally found a sling better, but that's what I heard.

Anyway, Ergo is a good carrying tool, even for larger children. Fixing a child on your back without helpers takes some co-operation from the child, so that's probably a bit hard with a small child - or it's just me being clumsy. Fixing a child in front position was very easy alone, so that's what I used. I did carry my son in Ergo when we made a longish train journey, and it was very useful. He slept in it, too.

Ergo is a good alternative to a sling, and feels more natural and better than many other baby carriers. Carrying a child in an Ergo is definitely comfortable.
