Everybody needs a good bed, and that includes kids. While some prefer having the whole family in one bed, many find separate beds a better solution. Thus, the baby will need a crib. Choosing the right crib is a question of taste, but there are few guidelines to keep in mind:

• Safety. Crib needs to be safe, made from safe, non-poisoneous materials and it needs to stand stable. Basic stuff, but when buying a used crib, it's best to be sure. Old second-hand cribs from 1970s or before may have lead paint, for example.
• Adjustable bottom. Can the bottom be adjusted on different heights? That is a good feature to have, as you can have the baby higher at first and then lower the bottom as the baby learns to stand up against the sides.
• Dropping sides. If the crib sides can be dropped down, that makes handling the baby a lot easier and reduces the amount of back-bending work. This isn't a crucial feature, but a nice bonus.
